About Us:

Maria Bechard, M.A., CCC-SLP is the owner of The Literacy Corner a private practice dedicated to the treatment of dyslexia and other language-based learning impairments.  She has national board certification and Kentucky board licensure in speech-language pathology as well as a Kentucky teaching certification in communicative disorders.  Maria has also completed graduate level education dealing with the treatment and diagnosing of dyslexia through the University of San Diego.

Maria has been a speech-language pathologist since 1983.  She began her career at All Children's Hospital in Florida.  Upon returning to Michigan, she was a classroom teacher for severely speech and language impaired students at the elementary school level.  Following her marriage, she moved to Indiana and worked as a school based therapist at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.  In 1988, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky and was a clinical supervisor in the Communicative Disorders graduate program at the University of Louisville.  For the next, 15 years she enjoyed being a stay home Mom spending time with her four children and her husband.  In 2004, she re-entered the work force as a school speech-language pathologist and that is when her passion for providing treatment for struggling readers began. Maria continues to work as a speech pathologist and has also been a reading interventionist.

Maria has made it her mission to educate her community about the prevalence of dyslexia and about the rights of individuals with dyslexia.  She is dedicated to promoting the love and excitement of learning that is often crushed for children with dyslexia.  Her passion is to ensure that each child can conquer that once daunting and arduous task of reading in order to become a lifetime learner.
